5 Minutes of Bliss: Try Hot Cocoa in the Morning

Some mornings, I just can’t. I wake up to grey skies, or a work calendar full of meetings, or an eternal to-do list. Sometimes it’s all three, and I just want to go straight back to bed until it’s all over. (When will it be over?) Mornings like that are when I need a little injection of joy the most.

Knowing I’ve been on a mission to add a few minutes of joy to my days, a friend suggested I try swapping my coffee for hot cocoa one morning. Give up my coffee? What madness is this? I left the conversation wondering if she even knew me. 

But the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea. Sure, I’m dedicated to my two cups of coffee each morning, but there’s not much joy in it lately. It’s such a routine for me that I often find myself headed for my second cup without even registering that I’ve finished my first. If nothing else, trying out the cocoa swap would force me to slow down and pay attention while I made something new. Plus, I love chocolate. Duh. So, I decided to try it. But first, research! 

I Learned a LOT About Hot Cocoa

For one thing, I learned that hot cocoa can be a great way to de-stress. The warm, comforting drink and the rich, velvety texture can help to soothe your mind and body. Additionally, the cocoa powder in hot chocolate contains compounds that have been shown to boost mood and reduce anxiety.

But the benefits of a morning hot cocoa ritual go beyond just sipping for stress relief. Taking a few minutes at the start of each day to enjoy a cup of hot cocoa can also help you to:

  • Connect with yourself: Taking a few minutes each morning to savor your cocoa can help you slow down and connect with your senses. Pay attention to the aroma of the cocoa, the warmth of the mug in your hands, and the taste of the cocoa on your tongue. This can help you to become more present in the moment and to start your day off on a mindful note.
  • Set a positive tone for the day: When you start your day with a positive experience (hello, chocolate!), it sets the tone for the rest of your day. A morning hot cocoa ritual can help you to feel more centered, calm, and optimistic.
  • Boost your creativity: cocoa powder has been shown to boost creativity and cognitive function. So, if you’re looking to start your day off on a creative note, a cup of hot cocoa may be just the thing you need.

It’s Easy to Make. Phew!

I’m no chef, but luckily this is the easiest recipe ever. To craft the perfect morning hot Cocoa, start with high-quality ingredients. Use good quality cocoa powder and the milk of your choice. You can also add other ingredients to your hot cocoa, such as cinnamon, vanilla extract, or nutmeg. Or add some turmeric for an anti-inflammatory boost.

I like a dark cocoa powder, but you may want a lighter cocoa. Both are delicious!

To make your hot Cocoa, simply heat up 1 cup of your preferred milk in a saucepan until it’s warm but not boiling. Whisk in 2 tablespoons of high-quality cocoa powder and 2 teaspoons of sugar (to your liking) until silky smooth. Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy!

For an extra dose of joy, these marshmallows will make anyone smile, even at 6 am.

Is It an Every Day Thing?

Don’t tell my coffee, but I had some real fun trying this out. It was a great break from my regular routine and forced me to be more present, even for a few minutes. I won’t be drinking hot cocoa every day, but now that I have a supply of the good stuff, I can opt for something special on those mornings that feel like too much. 

Making It Part of Your Morning Ritual

Here are some tips for making the most of a morning hot cocoa ritual:

  • Find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. This could be in your kitchen, on your porch, or in your bedroom. Or possibly the back of your closet. You do you. 
  • Take some time to really savor your hot cocoa. Pay attention to the aroma, the taste, and the texture. 
  • Try conjuring up a memory of hot cocoa from your childhood…you know, back before the grind got you down. 
  • Enjoy the moment simply for what it is. 5 minutes of treating yourself before you face the day. You deserve it!

  1. This sounds fun! I do love hot cocoa as an afternoon treat once in a while. I agree that switching up something in your morning routine can make it easier to get moving in the morning–if I have a special breakfast treat waiting for me like a cinnamon bun or a Poptart, it is much easier to crawl out of bed! 🙂

    1. Absolutely. I think it’s important to shake up our mornings with something fun. If everything in your morning routine is just in service of getting you out the door and to work on time, then it’s not really for you. I’ll have some fun iced coffee ideas when the weather gets warmer.
