Morning Rituals: Dancing On My Own

Like most people, I don’t look back on my pandemic era too fondly. I was living alone in New York, so I quickly began to feel isolated, and my energy just dragged. One bright spot of that time was scrolling through the apps and watching people doing the latest dance craze. Finally, after watching 1 gazillion versions of the Cardi B “Up” dance, I actually got up and gave it a shot.

To say that I’m not a good dancer is the understatement of the century, but I set about this task with the determination of Julia Stiles in Save the Last Dance. I watched a bunch of tutorials and just practiced and practiced. Maybe I never got it totally right, but I noticed that after a practice session – even a quick one – my spirits were lifted. Fast forward to 2023, and I had almost forgotten about those hazy days of lockdown until I stumbled across this article. It asks a great question: “Why Don’t We Dance More?” And it made me think of another: “Can dancing be a part of my morning routine?” I mean, why the hell not?

To Boogie or Not to Boogie?

As with all things, I did a little research first. It turns out dancing as part of a fun morning routine has a ton of benefits. Here are just a few that piqued my interest: 

  • Boosts Your Mood: Starting your day with music and movement is an instant mood lifter. It releases endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals, making you feel more positive and ready to tackle the day.
  • Increases Energy Levels: Dancing gets your blood flowing and wakes up your body. It provides a natural energy boost that’s much healthier than reaching for that extra cup of coffee.
  • Enhances Mental Clarity: The coordination required in dancing stimulates various brain areas, enhancing concentration and memory.
  • Cultivates Creativity: Engaging in a creative activity like dancing first thing in the morning can spark your creativity and influence your approach to tasks and challenges throughout the day.

Basically, adding some dancing to your morning routine is a win-win-win-win situation. 

Make the Right Moves

So, how exactly do you do that? You could just try blasting your favorite playlist each morning and let the music move you, but here at Morning Human, we’ve found that being just a tad more intentional can make the simplest activity more powerful and purposeful. Here are some ways to make it a little more special. 

Incorporate with Intention: If dancing is going to be a part of your regular routine, give some thought to where it fits in and why. Maybe you want to start with dancing to get your blood flowing, then move into journaling or a tea ritual to wind down. You can also choose to have your dance session at the end of your routine to enter the rest of your day with a burst of energy. The key is figuring out what works for you.

Curate Your Playlist: Create a special playlist that you only listen to during your morning dance session. Select songs that uplift and energize you and remind you of happy times. You may only dance it out for 10 minutes, but be sure to create a longer playlist. Half the fun here is listening on shuffle and being hyped when the next song comes on. 

Create a Dance-Friendly Space: Nothing kills the vibe faster than tripping over an ottoman when you’re trying to boogie down. Clear a small area where you can move freely without bumping into furniture. Some people (ahem, me) like to set the mood with a mini-disco light.

Explore Different Dance Styles: Keep it interesting by experimenting with different types of dance – from salsa to hip-hop to Bollywood. You can even get on your own Vigilante Shit and learn some Fosse. Variety will keep your mornings interesting. You can also use this time to connect to dance rituals that may be an important part of your family’s culture. 

Google It: Sometimes you just want to freestyle, and that’s cool. But if you want to learn a little choreography, all the information you need is at your fingertips. Searching for the dance style + simple tutorial will uncover endless resources. Do this in the evening so you have a video cued up and ready to follow in the morning.  

Set Aside Judgement: If you’re new to dancing, start with simple steps. The goal of this fun morning routine is to move your body and enjoy the process. And sure, you might feel a little silly at first, but no one is watching…so you know…dance like it.

Now Get On the Dance Floor!

These are our tips and suggestions, but there are really no rules here. The best way to make dancing a part of a fun morning routine is to do it in a way that sparks joy for you and you alone. 

This practice is about more than the physical benefits, though there are a ton. It’s also about the joy and liberation that come from expressing yourself through movement. Whether you’re stepping up your TikTok game or just grooving to your favorite tunes, the key is to let go and enjoy the moment and the movement. It’s all about creating a space where you can start your day with positivity, energy, and maybe even a little bit of sweat.
